Bower Ashton retains one of its links with North Somerset as it remains in the (mostly) North Somerset parish of
Leigh Woods, Abbots Leigh and Bower Ashton parish.
Despite the 1930's civil transfer of Bower Ashton to Bristol.
The parish has two churches: St. Mary the Virgin in Church Road, Leigh Woods and Holy Trinity in Church Road, Abbots Leigh.
There is a parish paper newsletter available (about 10 issues per year) for a small charge,
in Jan 2009 that was £3.00 (by hand) or £5 (by post) per year.
The newsletter is another source of information on local events too.
Such as the taller walls being build on the Bristol to Portishead road on Rownham Hill's, Ashton Court boundary.
This is for the planned expansion of the red deer park.
My two photos of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Leigh Woods don't do it justice,
as I could not avoid the trees.
On the 19th Century map (link top right), its shown as Holy Cross Church and suitably positioned to keep an eye on its neighbour - Ashton Gate Brewery.
Mounted Section.
On June 1st 2006 there were 10 horses (aged between 4 and 15) - Ashton, Beaufort, Broadmead, Brunel, Clifton, Imperial, Monty, Redland, Somerset and St. Michael.
Both dog and mounted sections are based in Clanage Road.
Public transport access is by the
Somerset bus services to Hotwells,
Anchor Road and the City Centre bus station.
On the bus services page select destination 'Bristol'.
Note that only express to stop in Bower Ashton is the Portishead service.
The UWE U1 bus service is now open to all.
The service runs from the UWE (Kennel Lodge Rd) to the UWE's Frenchay campus via Coronation Road, Temple Meads and Zetland Road.
